Laboratory of Environmental Analyses

The Laboratory of Environmental Analyses (LEA) constitutes a unit of Faculty of Environmental Engineering of Lublin University of Technology. The laboratory was created as an independent unit after relocation of the Faculty to a new building in 2001. At present, the laboratory has 5 employees.

LEA conducts the analyses both by means of the classic and instrumental methods.

We provide high-quality qualitative and quantitative analysis of environmental samples and contaminants done by either a classical or instrumental procedure in:

  • water,
  • wastewater
  • soil
  • sewage sludges
  • municipal and industrial wastes
  • sediments
  • dust / ashes
  • indoor and outdoor air
  • biogas landfill leachate
  • plants, biological samples
  • food products

The equipment of LAS includes, among others:

  • JY 238 Ultrace emission spectrometer manufactured by Yobin-Yvon
    Used for indication of metals with ICP-OES technique (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, In, J, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Se, Si, Sr, Te, Tl, U, V, W, Zn)
    The analyses are carried out for aqueous and solid samples.
  • Anton Paar Multiwave 3000 microwave system
    Used when a sample requires mineralization prior to ICP-OES analysis. The device is additionally equipped with a module for Microwave Aided Extraction (MAE).
  • Liquid chromatograph coupled with mass spectrometer 1200 HPLC Agilent – 4000 Q Trap
  • Trace GC Ultra gas chromatograph (Thermo Scientific) with FID and TCD detectors
  • Tace GC Ultra gas chromatograph (Thermo Scientific) with MS detector
    Used for chromatographic analyses of volatile extracts and semi-volatile organic compounds, as well as analyses of air and exhaust gases. The devices allow for the application of SPME method.
  • Kjeltec 8200 (FOSS)
    Used for indicating total organic and ammonia nitrogen (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen). The analyses are conducted for aqueous and solid samples.
  • FIAstar 5000 system (FOSS)
    Used for indicating total ammonia nitrogen, phosphates, and nitrates. The analyses are performed for aqueous samples.
  • Analizator węgla TOC5050A (Shimadzu)
    The device is employed in the analysis of carbon in water and solids.

Preparation of samples prior to the final analysis is conducted by means of:

  • Dionex ASE 350 (Themo Scientific Dionex)
    Used in the extraction of analytes from natural food and pharmaceutical products, soils, sediments and tissues.
    Supersedes the inconvenient and time-consuming extraction carried out in Soxhlet apparatus.
  • Alpha 1-4 Laboratory freeze dryer (Christ)
  • ZM200 ultra-centrifugal mill (Retsch)
    The mill is equipped with titanium rotors and sieves, which enable grinding of material without heavy metal pollution
